Cyber bullying Information Evening for ParentsBy Ms. C. Lane 2006-10-04
To most parents, bullying is something that happens to other people’s children in schoolyards and in hallways. These parents would be shocked to learn that their son or daughter is being bullied in their own room via an unlikely and unsuspected source: the family computer. Welcome to cyber bullying – a form of bullying that occurs electronically and can affect any child that uses e-mail, chat rooms or peer to peer information exchanges. The results can range from simply annoying to tragic. Parents need to know the risks that children of all ages face when they exchange any personal information on line. The Safe Schools Action Program, implemented by the Halton Catholic District School Board, is being put in place to help parents protect against this form of abuse. Our CtK team is inviting concerned parents to an information session on the forms cyber bullying can take on Wednesday, October 11th. This session runs from 7-9p.m. in the school theatre. It is being sponsored by Microsoft and will provide parents a host of measures that can be used to protect their families from this sort of bullying. Constable Peppler, the liaison officer from the Halton Police Service will also be present to answer any questions parents may have. If you have a computer at home and have anyone in your family using the Internet, you owe it to yourselves to attend this information session. |
