Welcome to Christ the King's House System. House systems have been used for over 100 years in a variety of school settings with the goal of raising school spirit and introducing students to an internal sense of friendly competition. At Christ the King we have created a dynamic house system. Our goal is to help grade 9 students starting at our school to get off to a good start by providing them a way to meet new friends and build a sense of school spirit early in their school careers. We do this by dividing all grade 9 students into one of 4 Houses. The Houses are: Centaur, Phoenix, Pegasus and Triton (named after Mythological and Symbolic creatures). Students are dividing by their Religion class and assigned to a House and thereby become part of one House with their fellow religion students. Each year we run approximately 4 "House Events" where grade 9 students will be able to participate in a variety of games and challenges in an effort to acquire points as a reward for success at these challenges. The more points acquired through the year by each House, the closer they get to winning the House Cup, which is the ultimate prize up for grabs each year. In addition to the House Cup, the winning House group will also be given a free pizza party with each other near the end of the school year. These rewards are simply ways to say "thank you" for participating in the life and spirit of CtK. There is a second component to this years House System. This second component includes opportunities to win points for each House. In every Religion class the students will be issued a special project called a House Project. Each of the 4 Houses have been assigned a Catholic value. The students in each Religion course will be asked to complete a project dedicated to that particular value. The 4 values are: Dignity, Compassion, Equity and Respect. These projects are constructed by the students under careful guidelines set by the Religion teacher. It is the goal of these projects that each student comes away with a much deeper and rich appreciation for the significant difference believing and acting on any of these values can make in the lives of others in our world. The projects will have a social justice focus and so will range from contributing to a charity to offering special help to a local or global cause. At the completion of the project, each class will evaluate their project in comparison to the other projects offered by the other Religion classes (peer review). Only the top 4 classes will receive points in acknowledgement of their ability to achieve great results while demonstrating the House value most thoroughly. These points will be added to the House Team totals towards the end of the year where the House Cup winner will be determined.
Although the House System is just for grade 9 students only, it will be a year they will come to remember for a long time. We wish all of the new students at Christ the King the very best for their first year of High School and may God bless your time in our House System by enriching your relationships and inspiring you all to become the best person possible.
